Tanzania: Council Targets Errant Teachers

5 November 2009

Tarime — Days of teachers staying away from classes in Tarime District are numbered, district council education officer Emmanuel Johnson has said.

He said teachers in the area were spending most of their working hours on personal errands, thereby retarding education development in the area.

Mr Johnson said the district council had introduced attendance registers to curb abscondment by teachers.

Teachers would be required to write down in the registers reasons for leaving their workplaces during official working hours. The registers are to be regularly inspected by ward education inspectors.

"Punitive measures would be taken against teachers found drinking during working hours," he said.

Mr Johnson hinted that disciplinary measures would include deductions on the salaries of misbehaving teachers.

The district council had received complaints from school committees and parents about teachers skipping lessons during working hours.

"I believe that teaching is a noble profession," he said, adding that it was a shame that some teachers were bringing the profession into disrepute.

With over 1,500 teachers for 123 schools, Tarime District faces a deficit of 800 teachers.
