Kenya: Officers Bribed to Leak Exams, Says KNEC Boss

Nairobi — The examinations council on Thursday admitted some candidates were getting access to papers for the ongoing national tests in advance.

In what confirmed Nation reports of a leakage of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams, the council, however, blamed the practice on unscrupulous people.

Kenya National Examinations Council CEO Paul Wasanga said the people were out to sabotage the ongoing tests. In an announcement to the media, he said officers, including supervisors, were offered money to open papers before they were distributed.

He said they also do so with the aim of exposing the contents to some candidates and other unauthorised persons. Knec cautioned all officers to be wary of such moves and report to the nearest police station any such individuals trying to induce them with money.

Irregularity

"Any official who attempts to open the envelopes containing the examination papers before the stated time is committing an examination irregularity as well as a crime and should be reported immediately to the nearest police station for necessary action," Mr Wasanga said.

He asked candidates to ensure that each envelope containing exam papers is intact and should insist on signing before it is opened in front of them by the supervisor. Mr Wasanga urged the public to volunteer information on suspected unscrupulous people who intend to commit examination irregularities.

At the same time, a man was on Thursday charged with gaining access to the Biology Paper 2 on Tuesday. After accessing it, Mr Albert Nyarangi Moindi allegedly revealed the paper's contents to unauthorised persons. The court heard that Mr Moindi accessed the paper jointly with others yet to be arrested. He denied the charge and was remanded in police custody until today to allow completion of investigations.
