Kampala — THE Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, has advised Kumi University to teach agro-based sciences and technological studies in order to help revitalise the economy of Teso.

In a speech read by the NRM vice-chairperson for eastern, Capt. Mike Mukula, Bukenya said Teso was one time leading in fruit growing, mechanised farming using oxen and beef processing.

"I would like to see this university promoting the teaching of agro-based sciences and technology studies in your respective faculties because the bigger proportion of our economy and gross domestic product depends on agriculture," said Bukenya.

This was during the 5th graduation ceremony held at the university's main campus in Nyero, Kumi district where about 400 granduands were awarded certificates, diplomas and degrees on October 30.

Bukenya said the Government would ensure that the university plays a leading role in scientific research and teaching and in agro-technological innovations.

"Design programmes which emphasise practical skills which are relevant to the people around you and other Ugandans," said Bukenya.

He said the university's programmes would be deemed useful if and when they reflect the needs of society.

"They should also be pegged to the present and future requirements of our society and nation," he said.

He added: "Good grades and academic excellence, however, are not enough to steer you through the rough and tumble of today's competitive world.

"You must walk an extra mile if you are to fit into the job market. You must be flexible, diligent and willing to do any kind of work that comes your way until you land the 'appropriate' one."
