Kigali — The Rwanda Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) has initiated programmes to promote proper farming practices to conserve soil.

The programmes; Sustainable Land use Management project [SLM] and Radical Terracing Programme [RTP] will run for three years in heavily degraded areas.

SLM is being carried out in Musanze, Nyabihu, Burera and Ngororero while Radical Terracing Programme is being applied in Gasabo, Rulindo, Burera, Nyabihu, Karongi and Nyaruguru.

Speaking to The New Times, the in-charge of soil conservation at RADA, Prime Ngabonziza, explained that the projects aim at, "capacity building for sustainable land management."

Ngabonziza said that land quality in Northern Province is improving owing to the projects.

"Before these programmes, the land was cultivated without land conservation methods," he said.

The United Nations Development Programme and Global Environment Facility donated Rwf 494m for the programmes.
