Uganda has been selected to host the prestigious CNN MultiChoice African Journalism awards 2010.
The awards which recognise excellence in journalism on the African continent were officially launched this week according to a joint statement from MultiChoice Africa and CNN International.
The Executive Vice President and Managing Director of CNN International, Mr Tony Maddox, said: "It is with pleasure that we announce the 2010 CNN MultiChoice African Journalist awards are returning to East Africa. And it is fitting that now in its 15th year; the awards are being held in Uganda, a country that has produced many winners in the competition's history.
15th year
The president of MultiChoice Africa, Mr Collins Khumalo, said: "May 2010 marks the 15th anniversary of these prestigious awards, which represent the premier journalistic event on the continent."
He added, "It is exciting to see the growth of media in Africa and we will continue to invest in developing and inspiring young journalists whose voices play a critical role in telling the African story. "
This year's winner was Mr John-Allan Namu, from Kenya.
Ugandan journalists who have won the awards include Simon Kasyate, Barbara Angopa of NTV and Richard Kavuma of Observer.
Journalists from across the continent will compete in 16 categories including Arts & Culture, Digital Journalism, Economics & Business, Environment, Free Press, HIV/Aids, Photography, Health & Medical, Print News, Radio News, Sport, TV Features, and News Bulletin.
Journalists have until January 28 to submit their entries.
