Uganda: 'NAADS for a Review in Karamoja'

6 November 2009

The government is to reconsider funding model farmers under the National Agricultural Advisory Sevices (Naads) programme for the financial Year 2008/2009 in the Karamoja region whose crops failed to germinate due to drought.

First Lady and State Minister for Karamoja Affairs, Janet Museveni, who was monitoring government programmes in Nabilatuk and Lorengedwat sub-counties in Nakapiripirit District, said Karamoja is a special case that needs special help.

She said the failed harvests due to the harsh climatic conditions should not deter farmers from preparing the fields for the next planting season as the government is committed to supporting them.

In Nabilatuk, the Sub-county chief, Mr Hilary Topoth reported that the Naads programme had registered some success in spite of the recent drought.

Inflated prices

He, however, said the programme was hampered by cases of inflated prices of improved goat breeds at Shs250,000 instead of Shs150,000. He said the officers who caused the financial loss have been directed to refund the money.

Ms Museveni toured Lotuke and Nyakwea sub-counties in Abim District and advised residents to utilise their vast lands to grow crops on a large scale.
