Lagos — The Federal Airports Au-thority of Nigeria (FAAN) has reopened the newly resurfaced Kaduna runway for flight just as the authority announced the commencement of the metal fence project at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport Ikeja, LAgos.
The runway was closed at the beginning of October 2009, to allow partial resurfacing of its middle stretch covering a distance of about 20 metres.
According to Akin Olu-kunle, the General Manager, Public Affairs of the Authority, the project which was handled by P.W. Nigeria Ltd was aimed at eliminating undulation of the surface and to improve the riding quality of the runway by aircraft.
Olukunle explained that the project included the re-marking of the entire runway, in order to enhance visual handling of aircraft.
The runway of the military base in Kaduna, he stated has been serving as an alternative for flight operation in the state noting that the completion of the Kaduna runway will enhance safety of aircraft operation at the airport.
Meanwhile, the construction of a new control tower at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport has commenced. The project which was awarded to Dan Makarfi Construction Company, through a government appropriation in July is expected to be completed by December, 2009.
According to him, the structure, on completion would enable the installation of one of the Safe Tower facilities at the airport.
Olukunle stated further that work has begun on the construction of a 10 kilometre expanded metal operational fence at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
He disclosed that the projects are few of several projects being carried out by the Authority across the country aimed at facilitating security at the airports.
The existing perimeter fence is made of reinforced concrete that helps in demarcating the landmass of the airport referred to as boundary fence.
The new operational fence, which is made of expandable metal, will secure the airside against security breach during aircraft landing and take-off.
