Uganda: Termites Invade Hospital

Busesa Health Centre IV in Iganga District is losing its theatre to an army of termites that has invaded the facility.

Constructed three years ago, the theatre was fully equipped with modern medical equipment to handle emergency cases.

But today, the facility has already lost its wooden doors, and window panes to an army of termites.

Several of its glass windows did not also survive the recent hailstorm that hit the district, forcing health workers there to declare the theatre unfit for use.

"Given its bad state, it's not healthy to serve its purpose," Mr Ali Kagwa, a clinical officer at Busesa, said.

Although not yet officially opened, the theatre has been handling emergency cases before referral to Iganga Hospital. Mr Kaggwa said at least four emergencies are registered every fortnight.

Renovation soon

The district Medical Officer Dr David Muwanguzi and the Iganga Chief Administrative Officer, Mr Charles Nsubuga Kiberu, told Daily Monitor that there are funds in the current budget for the renovation of the theatre, adding that it would start operation soon.
