6 November 2009

A Somali businessman has been shot and killed by unidentified gunmen overnight in the port town of Bosaso in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland, witnesses told Shabelle radio on Friday.

Locals said that the deceased man was called Jama'a Aden Mohamed known as (Jama Sibito) and was killed as he was from a mosque that he prayed the evening prayer in Bosaso town.

Other sources said that he was a former member of the BIS troops of Puntland administration. But halted working with intelligence forces of Puntland earlier and it is unclear the reason that the armed men killed him so far.

The armed group had also wounded another man who was a civilian as they were killing the businessman in the town.

More troops from Puntland administration had reached at the scene where killing action happened overnight and carried out operations capturing more people charging for relating the murdering action in the town.

The killing action against the Somali businessman comes as there had insecurity situations rising from the port and business town of Bosaso in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland recently.

Puntland was an oasis of peace for a quite good time but the time of reckoning has just arrived. The political environement of Puntland is now a days as muddy as that of the south and in the best part of the past six months assasinations, sucide, tribal wars, ethiopian intelegence abduction of somali west people, forced repatriation of Somali refugees from Ethiopia and opperssion of Islamists is the norm just like Mogadishu. I am afraid Puntland is becoming a new theatre of war between the Islamists and nationalists on one side and what is seen as the Ethiopian stooges on the other side. Security is becoming a thing of the past because assasinations of politicians, tribal elders, businessmen and Ogadeni notables and refugees from Gaalkaayo to Bossaso makes the headlines of the news and managed to get a sizable slot in the breaking news as well.

It is a sad reality but Puntland must balance its priorities and limit its master's demands(Ethiopia) if it wants to stay afloat - Puntland has no choice but to concentrate on wining the heart of Somali nationalists and Islamists for its survival.
