Tunis — During a meeting held on November 2, 2009 between President Ben Ali and the Prime Minister, the Head of State recommended to enhance the effectiveness of the 2nd phase of the program to promote popular districts.

The growing development of popular districts around the country's major cities has been the focal point of the Presidential Program for the promotion of popular districts, including the 2007-2009 first phase which has improved the infrastructure and developed the productive activities in 26 neighborhoods with 166,000 inhabitants.

Concerning the second phase of the Presidential program for 2010-2012, 56 districts and 200,000 thousand beneficiaries will take advantage of the program. This will affect 41 districts of the Greater Tunis area and 18 others in 10 governorates. Interventions will be carried out on 2 fronts: infrastructure, community facilities, economic activities and training.

The 3-year program to promote these areas as instructed by President Ben Ali, was launched on December 9, 2006.

The Greater Tunis area as well as other popular districts have benefited from the program whose total budget is estimated at 38 million 500, 000 dinars in 2008.

In 2009, 35 million 500, 000 dinars will be spent to finance the program's operations in some districts in the Greater Tunis area such as "Jiara 2-', and the district of Zaitouna in El Kef.
