Abuja — Government will impose appropriate sanctions on anybody whose act of omission or commission leads it to unnecessary and wasteful expenditure, Minister of Education, Dr. Sam Egwu has said.
Egwu, who gave the warning at the first segment of the capacity building workshops for principal officers of tertiary institutions and parastatals of the ministry in Abuja warned that "the same wrath of government will be visited on individuals and officers who engage in corrupt practices that further depreciate the meager resources."
The minister noted that it was "disheartening to note that in spite of the inadequate resources available in the tertiary institutions, leakages in the resources of our institutions are the order of the day.
"In some instances, we have found that Chief Executives have embarked on reckless expenditure and diversion of funds. Some of you incur huge expenditures on avoidable litigations, legal fees and retainership."
On the roadmap for the Education Sector, which was designed, on his assumption of office, to reposition the sector, Egwu urged the participants to use the workshop as an avenue for further exploring how the tertiary education sub-sector can facilitate its own part of the policies, as enshrined in the Roadmap.
"I also encourage you to be vanguards in the implementation of the Roadmap by keying into it, and also by designing your respective Roadmaps for transforming your institutions. In doing so, I advise you to collaborate with your Governing Councils to ensure that your institutions are managed efficiently with missionary zeal.
"Since our tertiary institutions were established for teaching, research and community development, one expects that through research the myriads of problems facing the Education Sector would be solved."
