Nigeria: Deregulation - It is Our Fight - NSCDC Boss

Abuja — Following the planned deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector by the Federal Government, the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr. Ade Abolurin, has called on Nigerians to see the task of ushering sanctity and cultural revolution into the country as everybody's fight.

Abolurin, who spoke at a meeting with zonal commanders, state commandants and other management staff of the corps at its headquarters yesterday in Abuja, explained that government's policy on deregulation does not intend to create problems, nor undue hardship for the citizenry, but is aimed at ameliorating their problems.

He disclosed that government's intention to surrender to market forces to decide production prices, as well as consumption pattern of petroleum products will lead to quality products and variation in prices. He described deregulation as an antidote to the country's corrupt nature, saying they are on the alert to ensure maximum security.

Citing an example with the dividends of deregulation in the country's communication sector he posited thus, "Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) enjoyed years of unbroken monopoly as the service provider before the sector was deregulated. But deregulation of the sector today accounts for countless numbers of service providers, which has made every Nigerian to enjoy a handy telephone call and even recharge at convenience."

On the Nigeria Labour Union intended strike action, he promised to ensure adequate policing of government infrastructure.

He, however, directed that adequate personnel be deployed to all nooks and crannies of the country for proper monitoring and surveillance of all installations to guide against vandalism, economic saboteurs and hoarders of petroleum products who cause artificial scarcity of the products, as well as black marketers and hoodlums who are fond of taking undue advantage of such situations.

NSCDC boss further enjoined all zonal and state commandants to uphold the tenets of no compromise in discharging their duties.
