PARLIAMENT yesterday heard that the media can be a dangerous tool if placed in the hands of non-professionals, especially during election time when political tension is high.
Chairperson of the committee on information and Broadcasting Services Mwansa Kapeya said this when he presented a motion to adopt the committee's report.
Mr Kapeya, who is PF Mpika Central MP said professionalism was the safeguard for the media and that politicians should not use it to fan violence.
He said the private and public media had not done enough to contribute to the political stability and economic development of the nation due to lack of training and appreciation of the current political and economic landscape.
Seconding the motion Nakonde MP, Clever Silavwe (MMD) appealed to the media to consider reporting on development programmes for the public to benefit.
Bangweulu MP Joseph Kasongo (PF) said journalism was a noble profession but it was dishearting that some sections of the media had continued to use it as their tool to insult others.
Bweengwa MP, Highvie Hamududu (UPND) said he was against media regulation because it was a sign of inferiority complex.
