Kaduna — About two persons were reported to have been killed yesterday by the police in Ibi Local Government Area of Taraba State, while about 20 others were also said to be receiving treatment having sustained injuries in a fracas.
The VOA Hausa Section reported yesterday that the incident occurred following a peaceful demonstration staged by the local government staff, who were undergoing a screening exercise introduced by the council to unmask alleged ghost workers.
A staff of the council who refused to mention his name told the VOA, "They shot two people and fled with the chairman along with the police. And the workers who were angry continued with the demonstration".
In a swift reaction, the Taraba State Police Command denied that the police killed two personnel of the council but confirmed the occurrence of the clash. The Command's spokesperson, ASP Sani Babanina, said, "We have heard about the clash and we are still yet to get concrete information and so we are investigating. I am assuring you if anyone is found wanting, including the police, they will be dealt with according to the law. I am also appealing for calm because the Commissioner is consulting with the personnel and is on top of the issue."
