South Africa: Depleted Team to Face Gauteng

6 November 2009

Windhoek — As if it was not hard enough competing with a full squad, the Namibian invitational cricket team playing in the Cricket South Africa Provincial Competition has to do it without five experienced players.

The Namibian team are preparing to face Gauteng next week, but they will have to do it with their tails between their legs because of a lack of depth and quality in the team.

The team has played four one-day and three-day matches winning only one of them so far. The prospects of their fortunes changing anytime soon where dashed when the bad news reached home.

"We have lost a total of five players to injury, retirement and international club competitions. This leaves the team very inexperienced," said the Cricket Board.

"We are left with a very young team. However, this is an opportunity for the youngsters to prove themselves.

The Cricket South Africa Provincial Competition is a league series of 13 three day and one matches. The competition tests the endurance, depth and stamina of the different provincial sides involved. After this match, the competition will come to a stop for international matches and resume normal service early next year.

Although the results have not been the best so far, the Cricket Board remains confident and are happy with team's progress.

"We have played very tough matches in the competition, against some of the best provincial teams in South Africa and did not do too bad," the Board said.

Now a South African side in the shape of Gauteng is coming to Windhoek, this presents the Namibian invitational team with a slim chance to bag a second vital win. With the home crowd behind the team, it is easy to get carried away but the Cricket Board choose to remain grounded.

"We expect Gauteng to be very strong. They will possibly come with some players from the South African national team"."Our squad will be tested during these tough matches.
