Gambia: Deserving Student Bags Scholarship

Youth Care Foundation The Gambia, yesterday awarded scholarship to one Marie Gibba, a grade 12 student of Gambia Senior Secondary School at a presentation ceremony held at the school, in Banjul.

Youth Care Foundation The Gambia is a registered charitable and non- governmental youth- oriented organization in The Gambia. It has been actively working over the last years to enhance the participation and development of the young people in the issues of promotion of science and mathematics education, health, culture, leadership development and youth rights in The Gambia. The YCF works in collaboration with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE), the Ministry of Social Welfare (MoSW) and the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC).

Speaking at the ceremony, Abdul Kolapo, Executive Director of YCF said the program aims to promote education and academic excellence among the young people in Mathematics and Sciences, to promote a healthy culture among the young population through HIV/AIDS, anti-smoking, drugs and violence campaign, promote girl child education, gender equality and human rights and to render assistance and support to the underprivileged such as orphans, disabled children and youths.

According to Mr Kolapo, the YCF mathematics outreach programs such as interschool mathematics competitions, workshop for teacher's development, summer mathematics project for students and formation of mathematics clubs in schools are all geared towards that respect.

He noted that it is with a great pleasure that the YCF is awarding a scholarship to the aforementioned student. He said that the scholarship pays for her West African School Certificate 2009/2010 school fee, PTA fee and others. Mr Kolapo also revealed that it would be their utmost pleasure to see that the recipient uses the award judiciously. "It would be a great delight that at the end of the session, Marie Gibba comes out as one of the best student produced by The Gambia Senior Secondary School", he concluded.

For her part, the Senior Mistress of the school, Haddy Njie, thanked the sponsor for their kind gesture and for choosing a student of her school. She expressed optimism that the reciepient would read hard to achieve the best results in the coming examinations. She advised her to take her work seriously because many people out there are looking for this opportunity and could not get it. Serreh John, mother of Marie Gibba, thanked the organisation for their wonderful gesture.
