Kampala — The government yesterday said it was in talks with the managers and proprietors of the two-closed radio stations for a possible consensus to reopen them.
Information Minister Kabakumba Masiko told journalists in Kampala that the government through the Uganda Broadcasting Council and the Police had forwarded its conditions of re-opening Buganda's Central Broadcasting Service and Suubi FM to the owners and managers of the two radio stations.
Among the conditions, Ms Kabakumba, said is assurance from the two radio stations that they would "never again" air reports that incite violence.
The government closed four radio stations on September 11 for allegedly inciting violence during the riots in the central region that left 27 people dead. However, Radio Sapientia and Akkaboozi Kubbiri have since been re-opened.
The Kabaka last week appointed a five-member team to negotiate on behalf of CBS.
Ms Masiko said the radios wouldn't be put back on air if they fail to comply with the set conditions. "The stations will not be on air before negotiations are concluded, and we must get commitment that they will not repeat the mistakes," she said.
