6 November 2009

The Minister-Deputy Secretary General at the Presidency, Pr. Peter Agbor Tabi, yesterday officially opened the office in Yaounde.

The dream of Ministers Responsible for Security questions in the Central African Sub-Region was brought to light yesterday in Yaounde with the inauguration of the Regional Bureau of the International Organisation of Criminal Police, OIPC-INTERPOL. Representing the President of the Republic at the inaugural ceremony, Professor Peter Agbor Tabi expressed satisfaction with the magnificent building that hosts the INTERPOL office. Agbor Tabi noted that "This is a remarkable effort to treat security issues in Central Africa". With the cutting of a symbolic ribbon in the presence of the Secretary General of OIPC-INTERPOL, Ronald K. Noble and a guided tour of the building, strategies to curb crime rates in the region are already in high gear.

The ceremony was an opportunity to congratulate and recognise those who had tirelessly worked in making sure that the Regional Bureau of OIPC-INTERPOL becomes a reality. This is why the Head of State signed a decree last November 3, honouring the Secretary General of the International Organisation of Criminal Police-INTERPOL, Ronald K Noble, and the Delegate General for National Security, Emmanuel Edou with medals of distinction. Professor Peter Agbor Tabi during yesterday's event went ahead to cement the decree of the Head of State by decorating both men.

Ronald K. Noble expressed gratitude to the Head of State for his efforts in making sure and accepting that the OIPC-INTERPOL regional office be installed in Yaounde. He showed excitement to have been part of the team which has worked with success in implanting INTERPOL regional office which will reinforce security in the Central African Sub-Region. According to Ronald Noble, the birth of an INTERPOL Regional Office in the Central African Sub-Region is as a result of a fruitful cooperation that exists between INTERPOL and the Central Africa Police Chief Committee (CAPCCO). "The office is very timely as it is coming at a time when Central Africa is trying to fight against trans-border crime and other odds", INTERPOL Secretary General noted.

Emmanuel Edou in his speech traced the genesis of the creation of the INTERPOL regional office in Yaounde which started in 1999. Gabonese born, Colonel Emmanuel Assama is the first chief of the office which amongst other things will serve as a platform to train the police force in Central Africa, present periodic reports on the trends of criminality in the region, evaluate and analysis information concerning police in the region as well as apply the directives of General Secretariat.
