Kenya: Telkom Returns CDMA Services After Approval

Nairobi — Telkom Kenya's commercial brand, Orange, has reintroduced nationwide code division multiple access (CDMA) services, after being restricted within regional zones for about a year.

This follows a move by the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) to allow Orange Fixed plus to operate a countrywide roaming service.

The move repealed an earlier decision to strictly confine it within the zones, on grounds that the company operated more than one mobile network.

"Technically, CCK requires telecommunication service providers operating CDMA platforms to operate within regional zones, thus the need to introduce a national roaming service," said Telkom's head of Corporate Communication, Angela Ng'ang'a-Mumo.

Active subscribers of the Orange Fixed plus, formerly known Telkom Wireless, have reduced to about 300,000 as many shifted to GSM services in search of fully mobile services.
