Gambia:New Cuban Ambassador Presents Credential

The new Cuban ambassador to the The Gambia, Her Excellency Ines Fors Fernenedez, yesterday afternoon presented her credential to the Gambian leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh at State House in Banjul.

Ambassador Fernendez replaces Carlos Salsa Mendi, who during his tenure once served as dean of the diplomats in the country. Speaking to reporters shortly after presenting her letter, the new Cuban ambassador said her discussion with the president centred on the excellent and longstanding relationship between her country and The Gambia. The discussion, she told reporters touched on the health sector, which is one of the main area of cooperation between the two countries.

She revealed that they also underscored the possibility to advance into agricultural issues, sports, amongst others. The idea, she said is to develop more bilateral cooperation and consolidate ties between Banjul and Havana.

In a separate diplomatic engagement at State House, President Jammeh also received Habib Sey, a senior minister and head of cabinet, as special envoy of President Abdoulaye Wade of Senegal.

After his close door meeting with The Gambian leader, Minister Sey told reporers that his mission is in line with efforts to strengthen the already fruitful bilateral ties existing between the two countries. The envoy who preferred not to disclose the content of his discussion with the president in detail, revealed that he had also conveyed a special message from President Wade to President Jammeh, who he added, also conveyed special message to President Wade through him. While indicating that he had very fruitful discussions with the president, the special envoy described the two countries as one.
