Uganda: FDC Wins Kasese Seat

The Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) political party has again won in Kasese District by winning the leadership of another sub-county.

FDC candidate Hezekia Baluku Bitaba, has been elected as chairman of the newly created Bwesumbu Sub-county in Busongora North Constituency. He beat the National Resistance Movement candidate Dragon Azalia by a simple majority of four.

FDC's Secretary General in the district, Mr Jackson Mbaju, said the win confirms the party's popularity in the area.

NRM miscalculation

In April this year the opposition party won the hotly-contested seat of Mpondwe-Lubiriha Town Council when Mr Ramathan Makoti was elected chairman.

FDC Vice Chairperson in the district, Mr Yokasi Bihande Bwambale (Bukonzo East MP) said the win proves that it was a miscalculation for the NRM to think that recognising the Rwenzururu Kingdom would weaken FDC.

"The people of Kasese know what they want until it is sorted out otherwise FDC will continue to dominate the district even if it comes to 2011 general elections," Mr Bihande said.

There is a growing concern in the NRM camp in Kasese on how to gain grassroot support as every administrative unit created in Kasese is taken by FDC.
