Kigali — A Gacaca Court in Bisesero has sentenced another prominent wealthy businessman in Karongi District, to first degree life imprisonment for his role in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
Abel Bigaruka, who was sentenced in absentia, was found guilty of actively participating in various killings in Bisesero, former Kibuye Prefecture.
He was also found guilty of the mysterious disappearance of an 18-year old teenager.
When contacted, police confirmed that Bigaruka was indeed on the run and intense efforts to track him were underway.
In a related development, a Gacaca court in Bwishyura Sector, has ordered the detention of a former nurse at Kibuye Hospital for concealing information regarding the death of over 100 victims whose remains were recently discovered in a pit a few metres from the hospital.
Authorities say investigations are underway to identify possible suspects.
Gacaca courts in Karongi face a major challenge of beating the deadline for winding up as new cases keep coming up.
The government, through the National Gacaca Jurisdiction Secretariat, has set the end of this year to have finalised all Gacaca cases.
