Kampala — The Police in Kyenjojo are holding a suspected cannibal, who was found with a stolen child in a forest.

The district Police commander, Vincent Ikwe, identified the suspect as Patrick Mwesige, 38, a resident of Kikyedu Mabira parish in Kyankwanzi sub-county.

Ikwe said Mwesige was found with the child by Christians of Kidudu Baptist Church, who later handed him to the Police.

Mwesige is alleged to have kidnapped 12-year-old Richard Muhereza, a son of Pastor Charles Kamara at the Baptist church, and carried him to the forest where he was intercepted.

Ikwe said Mwesige picked Muhereza from outside the church at about 2:00am last Wednesday when he had gone to ease himself.

Muhereza's parents were attending overnight prayers at the church.

When they learnt that their son was missing, Ikwe said, they informed the church members, who mounted a search and arrested Mwesige as he was carrying Muhereza on his shoulders in Rwenjaza Forest, a few kilometres from the church.

Mwesige told the Police that he was taking Muhereza to Rwenjaza Forest, where his accomplices, John Kyalimpa, Fred Mugisa and another only identified as Byairungu, were hiding as they waited to slaughter the boy.

Ikwe said Mwesige would be charged with kidnap.

Mwesige is the fourth suspected cannibal to be arrested in the district in less than a year.
