Central Africa: RB Hails Great Lakes Region Partners

PRESIDENT Rupiah Banda has commended Great Lakes Region cooperating partners for their continued support towards the attainment and consolidation of peace, security and development in the region.

President Banda who is the Chairperson of the International Conference on Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) said he was impressed with the outcome of the just ended two-day Round Table conference on the implementation of the 2006 Pact on security, stability and development.

He said there was clear evidence of seriousness and commitment from the partners going by their contributions at the conference and in other forums.

Mr Banda was speaking at the close of the Round Table conference on the Implementation of the Great Lakes Pact for 2006 at the Source Du Nil in Bujumbura.

He said the presence of cooperating partners at the conference was a clear indication that the region had friends to rely on.

He however called upon member states and the ICGLR to ensure implementation of the recommendations of the conference.

Mr Banda, who was impressed with the work being done by the African Development Bank said the region was faced with numerous problems which can be solved.

Meanwhile, Mr Banda commended the president of the Republic of Burundi for his tireless efforts to bring about peace and development in Burundi.

He said whatever had been achieved in Burundi, in terms of peace in the recent past, should be attributed to President Pierre Nkurunziza.

He further called upon the media to educate the population in the region and world over on the positive work being done to improve the welfare and image of the region.

And President Nkurunziza said he was impressed with what had been achieved in Burundi so far.

He said peace and security cannot exist in isolation and that the region needed to unite to achieve set objectives for the betterment of its people.
