7 November 2009

A COUPLE has drowned in a swimming pool at Manchichi Bay Lodge in Siavonga.

Manchichi Bay Lodge Acting Manager, Phillip Nkonde confirmed the death of the couple in an interview with ZANIS in Siavonga yesterday.

Mr Nkonde said that the guest register had details of a Mr E. Zulu of Woodlands in Lusaka who was in the company of a woman whose particulars were not made available.

Mr Nkonde said after having dinner in the night on Thursday, the couple decided to go swimming in the pool located within the premises of Manchichi Lodge.

He said, according to a report given to him by officers on duty, the woman who is believed to be in her early 20s decided to take her lover to the swimming pool in order to teach him how to swim.

Mr Nkonde explained that while conducting the lessons, the man failed to contain the pressure and started drowning forcing the woman to struggle with him in an effort to rescue him leading to both of them drowning.

And investigations carried out revealed that Mr Zulu, who is employed as a customs officer by the Zambia Revenue Authority was recently transferred from Lusaka to Siavonga's Kariba border post.

The bodies of the couple were retrieved from the swimming pool by Siavonga police officers around 23.00 hours.
