Zambia: CEEC Launches Translated Act

7 November 2009

THE Citizens Economic Empowerment Fund (CEEC) has launched its translated Act of 2009 in seven local languages and in Braille to enable every targeted citizen benefits from the initiative.

Central Province Permanent Secretary Denny Lumbama launched the revised Act number nine of 2006, which has been translated into Chichewa, Chitonga, Chibemba, Kikaonde, Silozi, Luvale and Lunda at a ceremony held at Misuku Lodge in Kabwe on Thursday.

"The launch of the Act in Braille and in local languages aims at ensuring that targeted citizens, including those with various forms of disabilities and literate challenged are provided with an opportunity to participate in national development," he said.

Mr Lumbama said everybody should thank the commission for undertaking such a bold decision that would enable a large section of Zambia's population with disabilities and low literate abilities to get empowered without facing hitches.

"Kabwe has been one of the few privileged towns that has benefited in more than one way. It is the first town in Zambia where the commission has supported a big green field investment in Kechas Enterprise worth K2.8 billion," Mr Lumbama noted.

In addition, Mr Lumbama said one-disabled citizen had already benefited from the fund while several other investments in tourism; agriculture and manufacturing also received CEEC funding.

He hailed the commission and the Government for undertaking such a productive exercise that has provided greater hope and light to the majority of the less-privileged among the Zambian people.

Earlier, CEEC director general Mable Mung'omba said the commission was committed to ensuring that every citizen was accorded an opportunity to contribute to the growth of the economy.

Ms Mung'omba said it was important that citizens were empowered to own shares in companies.

She said it would be great if citizens were allowed to participate in the operations of the defunct, Zambia China Mulungsuhi Textiles (ZCMT), by making sure that they owned shares.

"It would be good if the Government could consider Zambians to own shares in ZCMT so that they can contribute to investments in such a company," Ms Mung'omba said.
