A CHINESE firm has expressed interest in developing the Lumangwe Falls hydro-power project in Kawambwa, District Commissioner (DC) Gershom Tanga has said.
Mr Tanga said in an interview in Kawambwa yesterday that the firm had since embarked on a feasibility study on the viability of the project.
He said the project once operational, would be expected to generate at least 200 mega-watts, enough to mitigate the effects of persistent power outages in the district.
The DC said the Chinese firm, whose name he could not mention, was expected to start the power project next year.
"A Chinese firm has expressed interest in developing the Lumangwe Falls power project next year, which will generate about 200 mega-watts once operational," Mr Tanga said.
The development of the Lumangwe Falls hydro-power project would help to attract local and foreign investments to the district, which has great agriculture and tourism potential.
Mr Tanga said the district administrative office was currently working on plans to construct a national heritage site and upgrade all roads leading to tourist attraction areas.
