TWO ailing members of a Chimwemwe Township family ravaged by a mysterious disease have finally been evacuated to the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka for further medical investigations.
Kitwe Central Hospital executive director, John Mwewa confirmed the evacuation of the two in an interview yesterday.
Dr Mwewa said they decided to evacuate two of the remaining five ailing people currently suffering from the disease.
He said the two were evacuated two weeks ago and depending on the outcome of investigations, health authorities would then make a decision on how to proceed with the rest of the patients.
"We took two of them who are currently under further medical examinations in Lusaka to try and establish the disease and, depending on the outcome of these investigations, we will decide on how to proceed with the rest of the patients," Dr Mwewa said.
The disease, that manifested in the late 1990s, has so far claimed four members of the family, among them the father, son and two grandchildren.
The disease begins by first attacking one's vision and energy levels to an extent of making one stagger and lose balance when walking.
The plight of the disease-ravaged family was brought to the attention of the general public in April this year and since then two people, the father and son have since died.
