Kampala — A 15-year-old girl was on Wednesday detained at Jinja Police Central Station after she was arrested at Jinja Hospital for allegedly trying to buy a newborn baby boy for sh500,000.

Esther Namusisi, a resident of Wakikola village in Wakisi sub-county, in Mukono district, was arrested after she allegedly asked student nurses in the maternity ward to sell her a baby.

The South Busoga region Police spokesperson, Samson Lubega, said Namusisi committed the offence on October 30.

He said she was caught when one of the student nurses whom Namusisi allegedly contacted to sell her a baby, reported her to a hospital security guard, Amony Mujjuni, who arrested her.

"When Mujjuni asked Namusisi what she was doing in the ward, she allegedly said she was ready to pay sh500,000 for a baby. She allegedly gave Mujjuni sh30,000 and promised to pay the rest, if they got her a baby," Lubega explained.

Lubega said, during interrogation, Namusisi stated that she was sent by a widow to get the baby. The following day, the Police interrogated the widow, identified as Florence Nankya. She later revealed she was Namusisi's grandmother.

Lubega said prior to the incident; residents claimed Namusisi allegedly had aborted her baby when her boyfriend went to Juba in Sudan to look for work.

Apparently, Namusisi got word that her boyfriend was returning, then she went on to fake a pregnancy by stuffing sponge in her clothes.

Following this, she allegedly went to the hospital to buy a baby boy to please her boyfriend.

Lubega said Namusisi will be charged with conspiracy to commit a felony or trespass in the maternity ward with intent to annoy people in the ward.
