Zambia: Ignore Opposition Lies - Rupiah

9 November 2009

PRESIDENT Rupiah Banda has urged Zambians not to be swayed by some opposition political leaders because they have nothing to offer to them.

Mr Banda said some opposition political leaders had been in the Government before and failed to take any meaningful development to the people, and advised them to ignore their lies.

Speaking when he addressed hundreds of MMD cadres that welcomed him at the Chipata Airport yesterday, Mr Banda said the MMD was the only organised party that could take development to all parts of the country because of its good manifesto.

He also took a swipe at the Patrotic Front (PF) leader, Michael Sata for politicising the death of Mr Grey Zulu's son.

He said it was against the Zambian culture to politicise the death of Mr Zulu's son because the Government had always rendered support to Mr Zulu, including Mr Sata himself.

"When Mr Sata had a funeral, I visited the funeral house, I did not go there with a crew of journalists but him went there with reporters. I have always had great respect for Mr Zulu because he is my mentor and guardian in politics," he said.

The president, who was accompanied by Home Affairs Minister, Lameck Mangani, Defence Deputy Minister, Eustackio Kazonga and former PF general secretary, Edward Mumbi, said he was in the province to thank the people for voting for him during the last presidential eelection.

He said Chama and Lundazi were the two districts that had given him a lot of votes during the last presidential election and it was his culture to thank people for voting wisely.

And Mr Mumbi said he left PF because of the lies of Mr Sata.

He accused Mr Sata of not being democratic in the manner he was handling party issues.

Mr Mumbi advised the Zambian people to work with the MMD and preserve the peace the country had been enjoying.

The president is today expected to fly to Chama District where he would address a political rally and later fly to Lundazi where he would spend a night before addressing another rally there.
