Zambia: Chief Lauds State

9 November 2009

CHIEF Mphamba IV of the Tumbuka speaking people of Lundazi District has commended the Government for constructing three schools in his chiefdom.

Last year, the Government constructed Kabinda High School and this year, it constructed two basic schools Kazinda and Fofyofyo in his chiefdom.

In an interview, Chief Mphamba said the construction of three schools in two years was a good move that should be commended.

He said in the past, pupils in his chiefdom used to walk long distances to reach the nearest school.

Chief Mphamba said the building of the three schools would increase the enrolment levels in his chiefdom.

However, the traditional leader urged the Government to quickly work on the feeder roads which were in a deplorable state.

He named the Nyaluamba-Muchelenga turn off road as one of the roads that was in bad shape and needed urgent attention from the Government.

He wondered if the road would be passable with the onset of the rains.

Chief Mphamba has also appealed to the Government to revisit this year's marketing season which he said was not good because the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) had failed to buy all the produce from farmers.

He complained that many farmers had not sold their produce because of the slow pace at which the FRA was buying maize.

Chief Mphamba said although the Government has started distributing farming inputs for the 2009/10 farming season, the packs were not enough.

"The four packs we are currently getting are not enough, it would mean that the next year's produce would not be enough because of the reduction in the number of packs the Government has given this year," he said.

Meanwhile, the chief has announced the revival of the Kulonga traditional ceremony of the Tumbuka speaking people of Lundazi District.

He said the ceremony had not taken place in the last 21 years because of the succession dispute that had rocked the Mphamba throne.

A protracted succession wrangle had rocked the Chief Mphamba chiefdom following the death of Green Zulu who died in 1988.

Chief Mphamba said Kulonga traditional ceremony would start next year and would be held on June 30 at his palace.
