Abuja — An Abuja magistrate court recently remanded six men in prison custody for allegedly being in possession of fake US dollars and using them to defraud one John Igede Anthony.
The accused persons, Onyebuchi, Emeka, Azubuike, Emmanuel, Kelechi and Michael, all of Kurudu village, Abuja, were arrested for allegedly defrauding the complainant of N23,000.
Prosecutor Ali Otijele told the court that on October 12, 2009, one John Igede Anthony of Area F, Corner Shop, Nyanya, Abuja, reported to the police that the accused persons jointly used counterfeit dollar currencies to swindle him.
"They jointly produce US Dollars with carbon papers and made them look like genuine ones, so as to defraud the complainant of N23,000, thereby committing offences punishable under Sections 79, 433 and 366 of the Penal Code Law," the prosecutor stated.
He said during police investigation, 54 fake dollar notes and the carbon papers used to produce them were recovered from the accused persons.
When the charges were read to the accused persons, they all denied the allegations and requested for bail, which was objected to by the prosecutor.
In her ruling, Magistrate Hafsat Soso ordered the accused persons to be remanded in prison custody till the police complete their investigation and adjourned the case to December 16.
