He gave the instructions while on a recent inspection visit to the project.

He told the contractor that the project which started in 2003 had been adequately and effectively funded since the coming on board of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua. He noted that the Federal Executive Council had recently approved the augmentation of the contract which the contractor had been asking for. He told the contractor that he had no reason whatsoever to delay the project any longer and the bridge must be completed before the mass movements of people for the Christmas in December.

Dr. Hassan Muhammad Lawal stated that Cross Rivers State like all border States was considered by the Federal Government to be very strategic in terms of national security and international trade and commerce.

Dr. Hassan Lawal stated that the bridge was the only link between the South-South and the South-East, and that its completion will shorten travel times between the two zones by several hours. He reiterated that the completion of the project before 15th December 2009 would be Mr. President's Christmas present to the people.
