Lagos — Executive Secretary of Education Trust Fund (ETF), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has said the fund would disburse more than N7 billion to 57 universities by the end of 2009.

Yakubu made the statement at the 2009 ETF Annual Strategic Planning Workshop, organised for stock taking and strategising for improvements in the education sector.

The secretary said each university would get N127 million, made up of N57 million for projects, N10 million for library development, N50 million for academic training and staff development, as well as N7 million for local research and N3 million for publications.

He said all the universities had accessed the accumulated 2008 funds.

Yakubu said the number of universities to benefit from the special intervention project might be higher next year with the establishment of new universities in Taraba, Sokoto, Kwara and the Ondo State University of Science and Technology.

In an address of welcome, Mr. Chukwuemeka Ekweremadu, chairman strategic planning committee for the conference, said the workshop would build bases for interaction for moving the education sector forward.

He urged the benefiting institutions to acquaint themselves with the recent special intervention projects by ETF to enhance efforts toward providing quality education to the country.

Earlier in an opening remark, the Chairman ETF Board of Trustees, Dr. Musa Babayo, said the fund had over the years addressed the falling standard of education through special intervention.

He said the workshop would review various intervention funds in the universities to ascertain their level of compliance with the ETF special intervention fund requirement.

Babayo gave an assurance that ETF would justify the confidence reposed in it through judicious use of resources.
