Dar Es Salaam — TZ, Stakeholders in the transport and logistics industry have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the management of the Dar es Salaam port in a move that should ease congestion.
The move which will facilitate the movement of containers from the port to Inland Container Depots (ICDs) has become effective this month. It means customers can now clear cargo within four days of the vessel docking at the Dar es Salaam port.
The agreement was signed between Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), Tanzania International Container Terminal Services (TICTS), shipping agencies and owners of ICDs. According to TPA director-general, Mr. Ephraim Mgawe, TPA has concrete plans of improving Dar port services substantially. Clearing cargo will be within three days of the vessel docking at the port.
"With effect from November 1 this year, every ship which will anchor at the Dar port will be cleared within three days," Mgawe said.
Mgawe warned that an ICD which would fail to transfer cargo within three days after the arrival of the ship would be penalized with extra charges. The chairman for the Tanzania Shipping Agents Association (TASAA), Mr. Emmanuel Mallya, said the new agreement is meant to ease congestion at the port for good of business.
For years the port has been accused of inefficiency due to congestion.
