Rwanda: Northern Sends Four to Miss Rwanda Competition

7 November 2009

Rwandans who had forgotten all about Miss Rwanda beauty contests gathered to watch their daughters, catwalk and model the latest fashions in the world. This was at Salle Polyvalente hall in Ruhengeri town. Musanze , Northern Province and the ladies who turned up for the contest impressed both the organisers and the audience.

They were generally informed and competitive unlike in eastern province where one contestant called Mt. Kilimanjaro a lake, technically knocking herself out of the contest for exhibiting ignorance in the public.

"They (ladies from northern province ) have the height, are slender and intelligent," Cleaphas Kabasiita, Corporate Communications Manager Rwandatel described some of the ladies' characters. Rwandatel is the official sponsor of the 2009 Miss Rwanda Beauty Pageant, a vital event to promote Rwanda 's culture and attract tourists but has been in limbo for the last 17 years.

The event was banned by Juvenaile Habyarimana, the late Rwanda President for ideologicla reasons.

They are: Umurungi Lilian Mukundenta, Peace Germaine, Peace Mugwaneza and Uwera Annuarite," Kabasiita named them.

They qualify for the competitive Miss Rwanda Beauty Pageant contest set for December 19.
