Kampala — ANOTHER charge has been put against the Kitgum woman MP, Beatrice Anywar, who was earlier charged with participating in a riot over the giveaway of Mabira forest in 2007.
Anywar and her co-accused, Ssalongo Ssekkidde, a builder in Ndeeba, on Thursday denied the fresh charge of inciting violence, read to them by Buganda Road Court Magistrate Godfrey Sayekwo.
They are said to be part of the crowd that rocked Kampala on April1 2, 2007, as they protested against the giving away of part of Mabira forest for sugar plantation. Three people died during the riots.
A total of 27 people were charged with participating in the riot, including Makindye West MP, Hussein Kyanjo and Conservative Party head John Ken Lukyamuzi.
Others charged were Fred Mukasa Mbidde, Robert Walugembe, Ibrahim Mugisha, Mwanga Kivumbi, Geofrey Mulumba, Hamis Mukali and Frank Muramuzi, an environmentalist.
In the amended charge by the Principal State Attorney, Caroline Nabaasa, the prosecution alleged that in April, 2007, on Kampala Road, Anywar defied directives by the Police, hence inciting the demonstrators to assault Police officers on duty and destroy property.
On the charge of participating in a riot, Nabaasa alleges that Anywar and others assembled on Kampala and Entebbe roads and conducted themselves in manner that led to breach of peace.
The case was adjourned to November 24 for more suspects to plead to the new charges.
