Kampala — Ugandan Rugby sides have lowered financial hurdles they need to overcome when they need to compete in tournaments organised by neighbours Kenya.

On Saturday, regional transporters Kampala Coach and Uganda Rugby Union (URU) signed a two-year memorandum of understanding to offer free transport to the Rugby Cranes and subsidized rates to club sides when they travel to and from Kenya.

The deal which started with this year's Elgon Cup in an informal state was finally fomalised in a symbolic signing ceremony at Kyadondo RFC between William Blick, the URU chairman, and Kampala coach's general manager Jack Okoth. "(Rugby Cranes) will travel for free for any event they choose to enter on the Kenyan circuit while clubs will pay rates lower than the market price. We shall also offer free airport travel," Okoth told the press gathered. "Since the core market is university students and many of them are involved in rugby which fastest growing sport and is well organised, we found it as the best option to give back," Okoth added.

The deal comes one week after URU signed a two-year kit sponsorship deal with South African manufacturers, Kooga. In an interview with Daily Monitor last month, Blick pointed out financial resources as the major difference between Uganda and bigger rugby playing nations. He set himself a target of Shs2bn from sponsorship which he believed would be decisive for Uganda to qualify for the Rugby World Cup.
