Buganda MPs on Friday accused the government of curtailing their efforts to table a motion for the immediate reopening of Central Broadcasting Services [CBS] radio.
Addressing a press conference at Parliament, the legislators said the government fears to lose in Parliament because it does not have the moral authority to defend the closure of the radio. Mr Michael Mabiike, the Makindye legislator, said: "We tabled this motion 10 days ago but whenever it is put on the order paper, it is struck off on the last minute."
They also called for the amendment of the Electronic Media Act. On September 11, the government closed CBS and three other radio stations for allegedly inciting violence during riots in Kampala that left 27 people dead. The Government Chief Whip, Mr Daudi Migereko, refuted the allegations. Mr Migereko said: "I have never seen such a motion anywhere on the order paper and I have never heard of any intention by the Buganda MPs to table such a motion.
