Uganda: Lions to Build Eye Hospital

Kampala — Lions Club International has secured $120m (sh230b) for the construction of an eye hospital in Uganda.

Lions Club District 411B chairperson Godfrey Oundo Ongwabe said the hospital is to be built on a12-acre piece of land in Namanve, which was provided by the Government.

Oundo was speaking during a visit by the Governor, Lions Club International District 411B, Joshi Kamal Bhushan to development projects undertaken by the Jinja Lions Club.

District 411B covers Uganda and Tanzania.

"This is going to be the biggest hospital in East and Central Africa. We will continue with the campaign against eye diseases in the country," Oundo said.

Oundo who is also the First Vice-President of the Lions Club of Busia, said they are in the final stages of processing the architectural plans of the project.

Kamal toured a tree project in Jinja and a Lions nursery school. He later distributed food items and soap and milk to eye patients admitted in the Lions Eye Ward and Ward 5 in Jinja Regional Referral Hospital.

Kamal said the Lions Club International wanted to ensure that eye problems were eradicated in District 411B.

The Lions have built an eye hospital in Masaka, an eye ward in Tororo and Jinja hospitals, among others.
