Uganda: Makerere, Gulu to Write Luo Books

7 November 2009

Kampala — The Literature departments of Gulu and Makerere universities are developing material to promote the teaching of a thematic curriculum in northern Uganda.

As part of the effort, 30 primary school teachers from Lango and Acholi sub-regions attended a three-day training workshop in Gulu last week.

The training, funded by the Development Partnership in Higher Education (DelPHE), a sub-project of the British Council, will train teachers in writing literature for young bilingual readers.

The three-year pilot project, which ends in 2011, is implemented by the two universities through their departments of literature and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) of the University of London.

The DelPHE Project Coordinator, Aaron Mushengyezi, said the project's goals are to train teachers in writing literature in Luo and English for young readers in northern Uganda.

Mushengyezi told workshop participants that the project also hopes to publish manuscripts written by the teachers.

He said once published, the works will serve as the local language text books for the Thematic Curriculum.

The Ministry of Education introduced the Thematic Curriculum in 2007. Pupils from P.1 to P.3 are taught in the local languages.

The arrangement, however, excludes cosmopolitan schools.

Mushengyezi, a senior lecturer in Makerere University Department of Literature, said the project would conduct an in-service training for teachers in northern Uganda.
