Calabar — Cross River State Government will privatise its ultra-modern poultry farm at Ikot Effanga Mkpa, Calabar, currently valued at over N30million.

Answering questions from newsmen shortly after an inspection tour of the facilities in Calabar, Governor Imoke said the privatization of the poultry was part of the state's effort to facilitate the growth of the agricultural sub-sector of its economy in line with its economic blue print.

Imoke noted that government has never been good business managers and said the State is poised to adopt the privatization option to change its fortune.

He said when fully operational, the facility will generate employment as well as service the growing hospitality industry which will translate into economic growth of the state.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Sam Oju, also speaking, contended that the facility which is the first in the geo-political zone will alleviate the suffering of farmers in the state who loose about 30 per cent of birds they buy from the western part of the country.

He also expressed optimism that the farm, when operational, will trap more than N500 million which poultry farmers loose in the process of getting their birds from other parts of the country.

One of the poultry experts engaged by the State government as consultants to the project, Dr Olu Oluyemi, said every thing has been put in place to ensure that standard practices are adhered to before the products are roll out to the markets. He disclosed that the farm has capacity for 17, 800 chicks in its hatchery, 78,000 eggs setter and 2,000 tonnes per hour feed mill.
