7 November 2009

The Global Industry Leaders Forum (GILF), organized by International Telecommunication Union (ITU's) Telecommunication Development Bureau in collaboration with the Ministry of Telecommunications and the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of Lebanon begins Monday.

The leaders' forum which will be chaired by Dr. Saad Al Barrak, CEO of Zain Group will herald the global symposium for regulators (GSR) from Tuesday and to end on Friday.

Since its launch in 2000, ITU's annual GSR has provided a unique venue for regulators and policy-makers from both developed and developing countries to meet and debate the key topics facing the ICT sector. Designed to foster an open dialogue between government, the private sector, investors and consumers, the event plays a key role in shaping future ICT markets worldwide.

The GILF and GSR will focus on the policy and regulatory strategies that can help ensure continued strong growth of the ICT sector in countries worldwide, and the hot topics that are driving current regulatory debate, including: Revenue sharing in a converged environment, Keeping pace with a fast-changing mix of technologies and services, Maintaining regulatory effectiveness in today's high-value converged markets and Network neutrality: a call for keeping the Internet open?

With the theme 'Hands On or Hands Off?', the focus this year is on identifying the right approaches governments and regulators can adopt to suit each country's market, level of development and connectivity needs.

At a time when broadband stimulus packages have been embraced as a key element of many countries' attempts to counter the global economic crisis, this event will bring together top-level decision makers from across the information and communication industry to debate the critical issues that will shape tomorrow's ICT landscape.

The event is expected to welcome over 300 senior participants from the international ICT regulatory community, the private sector, regional and international organizations, and other key stakeholders.

It is being held under the High Patronage of President Michel Sleiman of Lebanon, and will feature the participation of ITU Secretary-General Dr Hamadoun Touré and Director of ITU's Telecommunication Development Bureau Sami Al Basheer Al Morshid.
