Nigeria: Police Kill Septuagenarian

Osogbo — It was a black weekend in Osogbo, the Osun State capital when an anti-riot policeman shot and killed a septuagenarian simply identified as Jacob Odedeji.

Odedeji and members of his family were returning to Lagos from Oyan, after the wedding of his child, at Saint Peter Anglican Church, Oyan, when the incident happened.

He was hit by the shot fired at the road block in front of Osogbo Steel Rolling Mill.

The driver of the deceased was alleged to have refused to stop for routine check, while another version said Odedeji's driver refused to part with N20 demanded from him by the policemen.

The sources said the policemen were angry by the attitude of the driver and pursued the car to Otan-Efun, before opening fire at the occupants of the vehicle.

Odedeji died instantly, while another occupant of the vehicle sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Osun State Hospital, Asubiaro.

When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Clement Akinola (ASP), confirmed the incident. He said Odedeji's car hit one of the policemen posted to the area for stop and search when gun shot was fired at one of his tyres, which eventually hit Odedeji.

Akinola said the policeman who fired the shot was beaten up by the mob and is yet to regain
