Ibadan — Men of the State Security Service (SSS) in Oyo State, have apprehended a syndicate that specialises in using hardware devices to access bank customers' database.
The four man syndicate, according to THISDAY checks, who were arrested on October 30, include Ekerette Esennubong Obot, Kayode Ogunmolade, Dele Ige and Olanrewaju Ipaye.
They were reportedly arrested following a tip-off when they were making an almost successful attempt to gain access into the computers of a branch of a first generation bank in Challenge, Ibadan.
The bank, according to inside sources, was just recovering from a similar cyber fraud running into several millions of naira which occured last year.
The syndicate were said to have lobbied a member of staff of the bank to help connect a hardware known as 'loggers' into the computer in the bank, after which the device will copy all available information of customers and their Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards detail.
The suspects, on interrogation, were said to have confessed that they recruited agents in other branches of the bank nationwide who will transfer huge funds from customers' accounts into accounts from where they make withdrawals.
Obot was said to have confessed that the aborted operation was not the first cyber bank operation he would coordinate.
A source within the SSS told THISDAY that the suspects have been handed over to the Lagos office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), for further interrogation
