Maiduguri — In its efforts to combat crime the Borno State government has donated 10 patrol vehicles to vigilante groups and local hunters employed by it to complement the efforts of other security agencies in fighting crime. While presenting the vehicles, Governor Ali Sheriff said the vigilante groups will work together with the police, Operation flush and other security agencies in the state to track down criminals.
The governor said with their experience as hunters, the vigilante groups knew the terrains and the hideouts of armed bandits who terrorise people in rural areas and on the highways across the state. Sheriff further stated that the local hunters who were used to walking should be able to comb the jungle and bring out information about the hideout of criminals to other security agencies, adding that their feeding allowances and fueling of the vehicles will be funded by the government.
The governor used the occasion to appeal to the general public to always give useful information to the security agencies which might lead to the arrest of criminals, since according to him, the criminals mingle with the public, nothing that with the establishment of the security agencies, crime rate in Borno will be reduced to the barest minimum. Responding, the leader of the hunters, Alhaji Muhammadu Maharbi, thanked the governor for providing them with the vehicles which, he said, will go a long to combating crime. He also assured the government and people of the state of his group's determination to fight crime to a standstill.
