Over the weekend lovers of Nigerian music gathered to celebrate the music industry at the third edition of the Nigerian Music Video Awards (NMVA) held at the Expo Centre, Eko Hotel and Suits, Victoria Island, Lagos.
It was an interesting outing with Dr. Alban performing It's my life on stage alongside Charly Boy, Benita Okogie, Waje, Bracket, M.I electrifying the atmosphere with performances that left little to be desired.
The organizers of the award also used the opportunity to remember the late king of pop, Michael Jackson by bringing to viewers a documentary on how he revolutionalised the music video industry with video of songs like Thriller, Remember the time, Black or White, Beat It. Still remembering M.J, two dance groups, Flex and Street Hood got the crowd 'overwhelming' with their imitation of M.J's dance moves.
In his speech at the awards which has as theme, "Music Edifies...Play responsibly," CEO of Callyvision Network limited, organizers of the awards, Cally Ikpe said the awards is an answer to Nigerians' need for an award that will celebrate the hard work put into making our videos.
He, however, lamented that genres like Juju, Fuji and Afro Beat are seriously threatened and have become weaker, urging musicians to look into these genres as they are peculiar to mainly Nigerians.
According to Cally, the Nigerian Music Video awards is the conscience of the Nigerian music industry and the theme for this year is to let our musicians know that obscene and corrupt themes don't guarantee high record sales.
The objective of the theme is to emphasis the need for musicians to be conscious of messages portrayed in their songs, to change the general perception and orientation that vulgarity sells, to reinstate sanctity in the music industry.
