AKWA Ibom State Government has set aside N30 billion for the construction of 2,000 housing units for the people, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, the Commissioner for Information and Social Re-orientation, has said.
Umanah told newsmen in Uyo, the state capital, recently, that the first phase of the project would involve the construction of 1,100 detached bungalows in Uyo, Eket and Ikot Ekpene.
"The project will be executed in two phases with 500 units to be built in Uyo, the state capital, 300 units at Eket and 300 units at Ikot Ekpene under the first phase," the commissioner said.
He said under phase two, 300 units would be built in Uyo, 200 at Oron, 200 in Abak and 200 at Ikot Abasi, adding that the state executive council had already approved the execution of the project.
"The decision to build the houses is informed by the need to tackle the housing needs of the people in view of the rapid expansion in development activities in the state," Umanah said.He said the first phase would be completed in May, 2010, while the second phase would be ready in December 2010.
