Nigeria: Over 1000 Cancer Victims to Be Treated-Cancer Foundation

Abuja — Stop Cancer Foundation, a non-governmental organisation is set to provide succour to over 1000 victims of cancer in the country.

This was disclosed by the president/founder of Stop Cancer Foundation Amb. Hauwa Hussaini in preparation for the fourthcoming raising billed for 14 of November 2009 at Yar'Adua Centre in Abuja.

According to Hauwa, over 80 people have directly benefited from cancer treatment while over 5 million people have also benefited through its enlightenment campaigns against the menace.

She, however, said that her organisation had met with the National ALGON chairman to fine-tune ways of reaching the people at the grassroots adding that if the traditional rulers, local council chairmen and councillors supported the organisation in reporting cases of cancer, the target of treating over 1000 people on cancer will be a reality.

"Beat cancer before it beats you. Going for cancer screening is the best thing people should embark upon. What we are doing is to complement the effort of our cancer centres in the country. We have centre in Lagos, Zaria, Ibadan and other areas", Hauwa stated.

She, however, called on Nigerians to ensure frequent cancer screening stressing that in every nine women, five people are likely to be faced with cases of cancer. Hauwa disclosed that it was important to support cancer centres to help the country to get rid of the menace. "Now that we want to give support to cancer victims who will be picked from every nook and cranny of this country, it is something Nigerians should appreciate".Also speaking, the consultant to Stop Cancer Centre, Mr. Adams Peter Iloyi, said that the proposed First Lady's ICCA will help the organisation in actualising it dreams.
