Abuja — The Minister of Transport, Ibrahim Isa Bio, has restated the federal government's commitment to revamping the transport sector for effective inter-modal transportation.

Speaking recently in Abuja at the contract signing of the Kaduna - Abuja railway project, Bio maintained that with the recent flag off of the dredging of the Lower River Niger, and the signing of the contract for the commencement of the modernization of the railways, the present administration has demonstrated its unalloyed commitment to the transformation of the nation's transport infrastructure and thereby bequeathing a legacy of a comprehensive, effective and efficient inter-modal transportation system. Bio also noted that the abysmal deterioration of the nation's railways was due to the long time total neglect of the services, to which the Yar'Adua's administration has adopted a holistic approach in order to revamp the sector by commissioning a team of reputable international and local Consultants to produce a 25 year development plan for the modernization of the Nigerian Railways.

Speaking further, he said when concluded, the railways will contribute greatly to the growth of the nation's commercial activities and, indeed, boost rapid socio-economic integration, particularly in the major commercial and state capitals linked by the Railways which includes; Lagos, Jos, Umuahia, Bauchi, Zaria, Kano Kafanchan, Enugu, Abia, Ibadan and Maiduguri. The Minister however solicited the cooperation of all stakeholders in the transport sector towards achieving the dream of a seamless transport network as envisaged in the vision 20:2020, in order to substantially improve the well being of Nigerians.
